Your questions

Solar Installer FAQs for Scottish Homeowners

Quick answer

Most Scottish homeowners want to know how quotes work, whether finance is available, if a battery is worth adding and how long installation takes. In short: you get a survey and a written, no-obligation quote, finance is available subject to status, and most home installations take one to two days once the paperwork is done.

These are the questions we hear most often from homeowners comparing solar installers in Scotland. Each answer gives the short version first, then the detail. If your question is not covered here, call us on 0141 230 0198 and we will talk it through.

How does Best Solar Scotland work?

Short answer

Tell us about your property and we match you with vetted installation partners that cover your area. They survey your home and give you written quotes to compare. There is no charge to use our service and no obligation to go ahead. We install through MCS-certified partners, so the work itself is done by certified installers.

We are paid an introducer fee by the partner you choose, and the fee is the same whichever partner that is. That means we have no reason to push you towards one company over another.

Can I spread the cost of solar panels?

Short answer

Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status. If you would rather spread the cost, ask for the full credit terms in writing and compare the total amount repayable with paying from savings. Take your time, read the agreement carefully and only borrow what you are comfortable repaying each month.

Paying in stages is common too: a modest deposit, then the balance once the system is installed and working. Avoid paying most of the cost upfront.

Is it worth adding a battery?

Short answer

It depends on when you use electricity. A battery stores daytime solar power for the evening and can charge on cheaper overnight tariffs. It suits households who are out during the day or use a lot of power in the evening. Batteries add to the cost, so ask for quotes with and without one.

The cost of a battery depends on its size and brand, and your written quote shows it separately. Ask how the installer sized it against your actual usage rather than simply quoting the largest option.

How long does the whole process take?

Short answer

From first enquiry to a working system usually takes a few weeks. Expect a survey, written quotes, time to compare and a cooling-off period, then the installation itself, which normally takes one to two days. Notifying the grid and any permissions can add time, especially for larger systems or listed buildings.

After installation you should receive your MCS certificate and electrical certificate. You can then apply to an energy supplier for Smart Export Guarantee payments for the electricity you export.

What else do homeowners ask?

Is there a charge for your service?

No. There is no charge to homeowners for using our comparison and introduction service, and no obligation to accept any quote.

How do I contact you?

Do solar panels work in Scottish weather?

Yes. Panels generate electricity from daylight, including on cloudy days. Output is higher in summer and lower in winter, and a good installer designs around your roof and location.

Will solar panels affect my home insurance?

Tell your home insurer before the installation so your policy covers the panels. Most insurers can add them without difficulty.

What maintenance do solar panels need?

Very little. Scottish rain usually keeps panels clean. Check your monitoring app now and then, and contact your installer if output drops unexpectedly.

Can I get solar panels on a flat or tenement?

Sometimes. You will usually need agreement from the other owners for a shared roof, and planning rules may apply. An installer can advise once they know your building.
