1. Installer's MCS Number

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) number must be on the quote. Verify it at mcscertified.com.

How to check: Ask: 'What's your MCS number?' Then visit mcscertified.com and search for the installer.

2. Panel Brand and Model

Exact manufacturer and model number. Not just 'solar panels' — you need specifics.

How to check: Check quote says e.g. 'Longi LR5-54HIH-410M' not just 'Longi panels'. Google the model to check datasheet.

3. Inverter Brand and Model

Inverter is critical. Cheap inverters fail first. Check warranty separately from panels.

How to check: Demand brand and model. Common good brands: SolarEdge, Fronius, GivEnergy, Solis.

4. kWp System Size

Total system size in kilowatt-peak (kWp). Must match your survey and roof capacity.

How to check: Check quote says e.g. '4.5kWp system' — this determines generation and savings calculations.

5. Estimated Annual Generation (kWh)

How many kWh the system will generate per year based on YOUR postcode and roof orientation.

How to check: Typical: 4.5kWp = 4,000-4,500 kWh/year in Scotland. If quote says 6,000+ — be suspicious.

6. Workmanship Warranty Period

Installer's guarantee on the installation quality. Minimum 10 years. Anything less is a red flag.

How to check: Check contract section on warranties. Must say 'workmanship warranty: 10 years minimum'.

7. MCS Certificate — When Will You Receive It?

MCS certificate proves compliant installation. Required for SEG payments. You should get it within 2 weeks of install.

How to check: Ask: 'When do I receive the MCS certificate?' Answer should be '7-14 days post-install'.

8. DNO Notification — Who Handles It?

Your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) must be notified. This is the installer's responsibility, not yours.

How to check: Ask: 'Do you handle DNO notification?' If they say 'you do that' — walk away.

9. Payment Schedule

Never 100% upfront. Typical: 10-20% deposit, balance on completion. Never pay in full before install.

How to check: Check contract payment terms. Red flag: 'Full payment required before work commences'.

10. Cooling-Off Period

Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give you 14 days to cancel if signed at home or remotely.

How to check: Check contract says: '14-day cooling-off period from date of signature'.

11. Dispute Resolution

Installer should be registered with RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code) or HIES for independent dispute resolution.

How to check: Ask: 'Are you RECC or HIES registered?' Check membership at recc.org.uk or hiesscheme.org.uk.

12. What Happens If Company Ceases Trading?

If installer disappears, your warranty may be worthless. RECC/HIES provide insurance-backed protection.

How to check: Ask: 'Is the workmanship warranty insurance-backed?' If no RECC/HIES membership — high risk.
